TZG Transforms a Glass Factory into an Elegant Office

Tonkin Zulaikha Greer (TZG) chauffeurs us back to the early-twentieth-century as they convert a two-storey former glass factory into purpose built offices.  The transformation stands out across 75 Myrtle Street, Chippendale with its glass walls that provides acoustic privacy and a visual connection between spaces. This sight entices passers to enjoy the interior view that transpired behind the steel and glass portal.

TZG is known for their special interest in reinventing architectural layouts as they bring surprising diversity to their completed projects. This time, the group was challenged as the client, Juliet Nelson, proposed to combine the gritty heritage of the former glass factory and the elegance of a contemporary home. According to Tim Greer, director at TZG, the apparent aesthetic paradox that laid behind the peculiar idea of blending industrial and elegance became the design basis of their design response. The space is to be used as an administrative headquarters for Nelson’s diverse suite of activities.

Various layers and additions contributed to the completion of the existing building. The timber structure of the building that typifies Sydney industrial architecture were retained and restored. Steels that support the area have been highlighted with their ochre red paint. Further, the two pre-existing layers needed cutting, layering and slotting to add fascination and function ability. Termite damaged timber columns were replaced with new steel bases.

Moreover, TZG provided design variations for meeting spaces to feel like “rooms in a home” as requested by the client. Recycled timbers were used for decorative effect on the floor complimented with carefully selected furniture and artworks. The project is indeed filled with engaging details underscored by mirrored recesses that gives the illusion of the ceiling space flowing throughout the whole space.

Additional feature of the building includes the succulent garden forms of a double-height atrium between the rear office zone and in front of the front office zone. A black steel-plate staircase that leads to the upstairs office areas were polished with brass that intensified its elegance factor.

Once again, TZG proved themselves to be a group that can excellently “define the relationship to make the architecture” as manifested by another completed project that tells of the site’s industrial past while still delivering an elegant take on contemporary workplace design.
